Single stage reciprocating compressors feature a simple design with one cylinder and piston driven by a crankshaft to intake and compress air in a single motion. The compressed air is discharged into the receiver tank for storage. Single stage models typically provide pressures up to 125 PSI sufficient for most pneumatic tools.

In two-stage reciprocating compressors, air is compressed partially in the low pressure cylinder and then fed to the smaller high pressure cylinder for further compression up to pressures of 175 PSI. Two stage compression runs cooler and provides better air quality.
